They were not always islands but actually a series of continuously moving sand-bars originating from an area called the Scarborough Bluffs and carried westward by Lake Ontario currents. People have been enjoying visiting the Islands since the early 1800s. Today, ferry service to Toronto Islands is provided by the City of Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation Division.
